Terms
Last updated [DATE]
Plain language, because you should be able to read this. Where it’s vague, that’s because we haven’t decided yet, and we’d rather say so than write something that sounds decided.
What this is
Placeholder is a habit tracker. The tracker part is free and works offline with no account. The league part, where you’re placed with about thirty other people each week and ranked on consistency, is a paid subscription.
Who can use it
You need to be 16 or older. We ask you to confirm it, and we can’t verify it beyond that. If we find out an account belongs to someone younger, we delete it.
The league is offered in the United States and Canada. If you sign up from somewhere else, parts of it may not work correctly yet.
Your account
One account per person. You sign in through Google or Microsoft, so there’s no password to lose. If you lose access to the account you signed up with, we probably can’t recover yours, because that account is how we know it’s you.
Paying
The league is $4.99/month or $39.99/year, in US dollars, your choice of cadence. There’s a 30-day free trial first.
- Starting a trial needs a payment card. You are not charged anything during the trial.
- If you don’t cancel first, on day 30 we charge the plan price you picked, and billing repeats automatically every month or year after that until you cancel.
- Cancel any time. Cancelling stops future charges; you keep access until the end of the period you already paid for.
- We don’t do partial refunds for unused time, but if something’s genuinely gone wrong, email us and we’ll sort it out. If we do refund you, you keep the access you’d already paid for until that period ends. We don’t take the time back.
- Prices can change. If they do, we’ll tell you before it affects you.
If your subscription lapses, you lose the league board but not your standing. Come back and you rejoin at the tier you left, not at the bottom. A card expiring shouldn’t cost you five tiers.
The league
Cohorts are assigned by us, weekly, based on your category and recent pace. You can’t pick your cohort or your opponents, and nothing you do in the app influences the assignment. That’s deliberate: it’s what stops anyone stacking a board.
Scoring is on consistency, not on how much you did. We reserve the right to adjust how it’s calculated, and if we do we’ll explain it rather than change it quietly.
If you fabricate check-ins we may reset your score, remove you from cohorts, or close your account. Most of the incentive is already designed out, since ranking rewards showing up rather than numbers, but we’re saying it plainly anyway.
Your data
Your tracker data is yours. Export it whenever you like. Delete your account and it’s gone, including from our backups within a reasonable window. See the privacy page for what we hold, which isn’t much.
What we don’t promise
This is a small product run by one person. It might go down. It might lose data. A week might close late. We’ll try hard for none of that to happen, and we’re not promising it won’t.
The service is provided as is, without warranties. To the extent the law allows, our liability is limited to what you’ve paid us in the last twelve months. Some places don’t allow that limit, in which case it doesn’t apply to you.
Stopping
You can stop any time by cancelling and deleting your account. We can close an account that’s being used to break these terms, and we’ll refund any unused paid time if we do.
Changes
If these terms change materially, we’ll say so here and date it. Continuing to use it after that means you’re fine with the change.
Law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Oregon, United States.
